Get Help Dealing with Parkinson’s Disease

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month. The nonprofit Parkinson’s Association of San Diego provides information and referral services, education, support groups, evidence-based exercise programs, community events, social opportunities, compassion, and encouragement to patients with this condition.

“Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting over a million people in the United States, including nearly 120,000 in California,” says Marty Acevedo, President/Chair, Board of Directors, Parkinson’s Association of San Diego. “While there is no cure, many individuals live their best lives with the condition through regular exercise, active socialization, striving for positivity, and guidance from movement disorder specialists.”

Latinos can get help in English and Spanish. “Although Hispanics make up about 19% of the country’s total population, this segment of the population is significantly underrepresented in studies on the condition,” says Lisbeth Garces, Hispanic Community Liaison. “The San Diego Parkinson’s Association offers dedicated support and services for the Hispanic community, with Spanish-speaking team members and a fully translated website.”
