Women’s Salaries: A Bird Can’t Soar with One Wing Bound

By Gordon Chavez, Financial Advisor

Have you ever seen a bird with an injured wing? Like this bird, humanity cannot soar unless men and women are equal and empowered by closing the gender gap and lifting both wings together.

Historically, society framed men as protectors and providers, leading to the belief that they were more capable and, therefore, more valuable than women.

More recently, there have been different findings. The anthropologist Mark Dyble at University College London said, “We’d argue it was only with the emergence of agriculture, when people could start to accumulate resources, that inequality emerged,” not because it’s human nature.

Fari Towfiq, an Emirati Professor of Mathematics at Palomar College, shares, “I have always been surprised that even in one of the most advanced countries in the world, the gender pay gap still exists. Over time, I came to realize that this issue is deeply embedded in our social systems. No matter how advanced we become, unless we address gender equality and establish fair, rational practices, the gender pay gap will persist”.

The community activist Patty Yant shares, “In order to have gender equality there needs to be a level playing field for women and men. When this is achieved, we will have a much more peaceful world!”

The World Economic Forum website states that closing the gender gap leads to a better world for everyone, noting that “Closing the gaps in politics and work means more equitable decision-making and better growth—and the latter could lead to a 20% rise in global GDP.”
