According to the Mexican Consulate’s Comprehensive Women’s Care Window (VAIM), 7 out of 10 women aged 15 and older have experienced some form of violence in their lifetime, and 1 in 2 married or cohabiting women is a victim of violence.
The goal of the VAIM is to strengthen women’s capacities to promote their independence and empowerment and break the cycle of violence.
VAIM provides women with legal and psychological support, as well as resources for economic empowerment and social reintegration.
Any Mexican woman in the United States who wishes to improve her quality of life or get support in a vulnerable situation can contact the VAIM. Consular staff interview them privately, where their data is protected. Based on the results, programs and services are suggested, and the woman is referred to assistance organizations and institutions.
The Mexican Consulate in San Diego has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with several institutions to address abuse and provides a list of resources to prevent and combat violence against women.
