Tri-City Medical Center

Tri-City Medical Center, located where the cities of Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Vista merge, is constructing a new psychiatric health facility at the hospital. In November, North County Informador spoke with Aaron Byzak, Chief External Affairs Officer at Tri-City Medical Center, about this project.

Byzak told us that mental health, including substance abuse issues, is a huge issue here in North County. The new psychiatric health facility will be a standalone building with 16 inpatient beds, meaning patients will stay overnight.

“That provides short- to medium-term care for people who may be suffering from a mental health illness who have already been stabilized at another location and brought there for more definitive care,” he explained.

The facility will be able to help with medications and counselling to stabilize patients and return them to their communities or families.

The building is a joint project between Tri-City Medical Center and the County of San Diego.

The facility will complement the outpatient care that already exists in Vista, providing intensive outpatient therapy for people in need, according to Byzak.

The new center is slated to open in early 2024.

Byzak also talked about crisis stabilization units, where the law enforcement or family member can take somebody who may be in crisis. Funded by the County of San Diego, these units are meant to respond to mental health cases instead of law enforcement or in collaboration with law enforcement. “People that are having a mental health crisis, you don’t necessarily want them to be involved in the criminal justice system,” he said.
