The California Association for Bilingual Education’s (CABE) Interim CEO Cynthia Vasquez Petitt, along with Jan Gustafson-Corea, the former longtime CABE CEO, kindly shared some key insight on the largest bilingual education organization in the United States. Cynthia shared, “We are a statewide organization of advocates who truly believe that we need to elevate our cultures and our languages amongst all of our people in California and beyond, beginning with our precious students.”
Jan shared that, for 52 years, CABE “has been promoting and advocating for the needs of our English Learners and Immigrant Students—and our work continues. There’s been a huge push for the Bilingual Teacher.”
CABE and Californians Together have been advocating with the California Department of Education for more resources for the Bilingual Teacher Core to help increase the number of diverse educators. “San Diego State and the CSU system have been working hard to graduate more bilingual educators, and I was happy to see that Cal Baptist, a private college, just graduated 30 bilingual educators.”
Cynthia shared that “the State Seal of Biliteracy is a GREAT gateway for future bilingual educators.” She concluded by saying, “We’re going to see some exciting things happening later this year with the California Bilingual Literacy Roadmap.” CABE is very excited about all these efforts.
