Your vote is your voice! It has the power to make a difference now and in your future.
When you vote you not only make your voice heard; you are also ensuring that you are represented by candidates committed to solving problems like the high cost of housing, health insurance, and decent childcare; or protecting our water and environment, keeping our children safe from gun violence, and defending our reproductive rights.
Latinos hold enormous potential power because we comprise the single largest racial and ethnic group statewide. Yet, Latinos have the lowest voter registration rate and are the least likely of all racial groups to vote. Changing this statistic starts with one person—you!
One vote can lead to 10, 100, even 1,000 voices, and those voices at the ballot box will translate to power. Register to vote, and get your friends, aunts, uncles, cousins and neighbors to register, too.
You can register to vote at the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. Information is available in English and Spanish. A trusted resource that can help with registration is the League of Women Voters of North County San Diego, a nonpartisan organization that works to expand and protect voting rights.
League President Marian Vega-Clancy says, “The League exists to help all citizens, including Latinos, register to vote and to make informed choices.” The daughter of a Cuban immigrant, she says, “Just as the League encouraged women 100 years ago to use the power of their vote, we continue to do the same today. Today, underrepresented voters, including Latinos, are an important part of our focus.”
There is still time to register to vote for the important upcoming election on November 5. The deadline is October 21. “We encourage all eligible voters to vote,” Vega-Clancy says, “because when you fail to vote, you silence your own voice, letting others who do vote to make decisions for you.”
Latinos are the fastest growing demographic in the country and have the power to make real change. Your vote matters!
